Thanksgiving and Christmas SAFETY Tips: Home Decorations, Cooking, and Candles!

The holidays are a time for warmth, togetherness, and creating lasting memories with family and friends. However, they can also be a time when safety becomes more of a concern due to decorations, cooking, and, of course, candles. It’s crucial to make sure that your celebrations are as safe as they are festive. So let’s dive into some important safety tips to keep you and your loved ones safe during this holiday season!

1. Safe Candle Alternatives: The Fake Flickering Kind

When it comes to lighting the holiday ambiance, candles often come to mind. But, let’s be real, regular candles can be a fire hazard.

PETS CAN KNOCK OVER CANDLES: Whether it's a curious cat or an excited dog, pets can easily knock over candles. This can lead to dangerous situations, especially with open flames.

CHILDREN CAN ACCIDENTLY KNOCK OVER CANDLES: Kids running around during the holidays? They might unintentionally bump into a candle and cause it to fall, which can start a fire.

UNATTENDED CANDLES CAN BURN SURFACES: Sometimes, you just forget that candles are burning. A candle that’s left unattended on a flammable surface can quickly spark a fire, even if it’s just sitting there for a few minutes.

FORGETTING ABOUT BURNING CANDLES: In the hustle and bustle of holiday cheer, it’s easy to forget that a candle is still burning. Unfortunately, candles should never be left unattended.

Make the Switch to Fake Flickering Candles

Let’s put our fire concerns to rest! Instead of traditional candles, opt for fake flickering LED candles. They give you the same cozy ambiance and warm glow, minus the risk. These battery-operated alternatives are safe, affordable, and look just like the real deal, without the risk of a fire. So, go ahead, decorate your holiday table with beautiful candle-like warmth—safely!

2. Deep Frying Turkeys: Not Indoors, Ever!

Ah, the allure of deep-fried turkey. It’s crispy, delicious, and the stuff of holiday legend. But let’s be clear—deep frying turkeys indoors is NOT safe!

Fire Risk: Deep fryers can cause fires when they overflow or if the oil gets too hot. When cooking indoors, there is no safe way to contain this risk. The last thing you want is a kitchen fire ruining your festivities.

Explosion Hazard: The oil can easily spill over, especially if the turkey is frozen or not properly thawed, and that can result in an explosion. Not to mention the potential for burns from the boiling oil!

BOTTOM LINE: NEVER deep fry a turkey or any large poultry indoors. Keep that deep fryer outside, away from anything flammable, and ensure you’re following safety precautions every step of the way. If you’re unsure how to properly deep fry your turkey, there are plenty of guides and instructional videos that will walk you through the process safely.

3. Skillet Fires: A Holiday Danger to Avoid

Skillet fires can happen when you least expect them. Whether you’re cooking up delicious holiday treats or your holiday dinner, never leave a skillet unattended.

Skillet Grease Fires: Grease fires are incredibly dangerous and can spread quickly. They happen when the cooking oil in the skillet gets too hot and catches fire. It’s vital to always stay present while cooking.

Have the Lid Ready: If a grease fire happens, don’t panic. Never use water to put it out. Always have a lid on hand to smother the flames. This cuts off the oxygen supply and stops the fire in its tracks. You can also use a fire extinguisher rated for grease fires (Class K).

Safety Tip: If the fire becomes too large, call 911 immediately. Always err on the side of caution!

4. Christmas Trees and Holiday Decorations: Keep the Safety in Mind

While decking the halls and setting up your Christmas tree, remember that fire safety should always be top of mind.

Keep Christmas Trees Hydrated: A dry tree is a major fire hazard! Always ensure your tree is watered regularly to keep it from drying out. A dry tree can catch fire within seconds.

Use Flame-Resistant Decorations: Make sure any decorations, whether it’s garland, tinsel, or ornaments, are labeled as flame-resistant or fire-retardant.

Check Lights for Safety: Before putting up your holiday lights, inspect them for any frayed wires or damaged bulbs. Never overload outlets or leave lights on when you leave the room or go to bed.

Fire Safety Resources: The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) provides resources for safe tree setup, decoration placement, and general holiday safety.

5. General Holiday Safety Tips:

Keep Fire Extinguishers Accessible: Make sure you have fire extinguishers in key areas, especially near the kitchen and where candles or trees are placed. It’s always better to have one and not need it than to need one and not have it.

Educate Children: If you have little ones running around, teach them about fire safety and the importance of staying away from hot surfaces, open flames, and electrical cords.

Secure Decorations: Be sure that all decorations, especially hanging ones, are secure and can’t easily be pulled down by pets or children.

Smoke Detectors: Make sure your smoke detectors are working properly and have fresh batteries. You can never be too safe when it comes to fire prevention.
