A herb garden is a simple and sustainable way to add fresh flavors to your meals, all while cutting down on food waste and packaging. Whether you have a large kitchen window or just a small corner, it’s easy to grow herbs that will help you cook with fresh ingredients.

Start by selecting herbs that are easy to grow indoors, such as basil, parsley, mint, cilantro, and thyme. These herbs thrive in containers and can be grown on a sunny windowsill or under a grow light. Make sure your herbs get at least 6 hours of sunlight a day, or use a LED grow light if your space doesn’t have enough natural light.

Choose containers with good drainage. You can use anything from small pots to repurposed containers like mason jars, plastic bottles, or old teacups. Be sure to drill holes in the bottom for excess water to escape.

Good-quality potting soil is essential for growing healthy herbs. Opt for a mix designed for indoor plants, and make sure to keep it moist but not soaking wet. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so let the soil dry out a little between waterings.

Herbs grow best in a warm environment, so keep them in a spot that stays between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. They’ll also appreciate a little boost in humidity, so consider placing a shallow tray of water nearby or misting the leaves occasionally.

Finally, harvest your herbs regularly to encourage new growth. When you cut leaves or stems, always leave enough behind for the plant to continue thriving. Some herbs, like basil, will even start to branch out more when you trim them, resulting in a fuller, healthier plant.

With a little attention, your kitchen herb garden will be a sustainable, flavorful addition to your home.
